Football without Christ
Today was our 4th annual football tournament. It went well by the grace of God. It dawned upon me as we played with many non-believers that we are very similar to them in many things but millions of miles away from them at the same time. Whilst we all run, sweat, breath, enjoy kicking a football, we don’t all see ourselves as lost, wicked and in desperate need of God. Whilst we all get hungry and thirst we are not all hungry and thirsty for God. What makes me different to the unsaved and unregenerate sinner? It is simply this: that I am forgiven by God and adopted.
Football without Christ, who needs it? In fact anything without Christ is a waste of time, useless and futile. He is all, everything, more than a sufficient Saviour. In Him are all things. He makes chasing after and kicking a football sweet. He makes getting out of breath enjoyable. He makes it worthwhile getting completely exhausted and then having a splitting headache. He makes it so worthwhile because I know if I was to drop dead whilst playing football, I would see my Redeemer face to face.
My prayer is for all those young men that played who didn’t know Christ. I ask you Father that you would have mercy upon them and draw them to your Son. May some of them know Christ before they kick a football again.
