What Jesus Didn’t Come For

luke956This morning during my devotional time with the Lord, I read Luke 9:56 and spent some time in thinking about this verse. It’s been ringing in my heart, mind and soul all morning.

We often hear so many sermons about ‘Why Jesus Came’ which is very good. We need to be hearing as a constant reminder of why Jesus came. But this verse is very special and unique because Jesus does the opposite and clarifies very strongly for what reason He DIDN’T come.

Jesus didn’t come to destroy men’s lives as He say’s quite strongly to His disciples in Luke 9:56:

For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.

His disciples had decided what they wanted Jesus for. They had put Him into a box and made Him fit into their hatred, contempt and dislike for the Samaritans and even Gentiles. However, Jesus saw what was in their hearts and rebuked them for this.

As a believer, the Lord strongly spoke to me this morning about this. Jesus came to save men’s lives, not destroy them. He came to offer hope, salvation, mercy to those who are afar off.

Come to Christ, He is all together lovely, altogether abundant and rich in love, mercy, forgiveness and hope. He hasn’t come to destroy you and me, but to save us. Come now whilst there is time, whilst there is mercy, whilst God extends forth His hand and offers salvation and free forgiveness of sins. Come now before it is too late.

…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10)

However, we must balance this out with other Biblical teachings as well and recognise that the Son of Man has also promised that He is coming back one day and the reason for His coming back will be very different to why He came 2000 years. When He does come back, He will come with a host of angels to rapture His beloved bride the Church and destroy sin and those who reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

…when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe…(2 Thessalonians 1:7-10)

Come to Jesus, run to Jesus, cling to Jesus with your dear life. He has come to save you, to offer you Himself and all the promises of God. He has laid down His Majesty and come to our level to redeem you. There is no sin that He will not forgive you of. He has proven His steadfast love by spilling His blood on the cross for your sin. Will you accept His invitation? This is good news, this is the beautiful and wonderful Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
