Are you feeling miserable? Tired, weary, sick, fed up and pressed on all sides? Like the sad face above with a tear in the eye? Are you feeling suicidal? Dull in heart and dead in spirit? Is there something happening in your mind and soul which you simply can’t explain to anyone? Have you had enough? Are you coming to the end of something?

If you answered yes to these questions, this article maybe for you. Read on because it contains the truth which will show you why you may feel like this and what can be done.

We humans have come along way since the days of our forefathers. We have advanced in communication, science, medicine, technology and knowledge. We know a lot more about the human body than we did 100 years ago. We know a lot more about space and the universe than we did 500 years ago. We can communicate at speeds which were unheard of back in the days. The world has apparently become more ‘connected’, whatever that means and reached dizzying new heights. But yet many people are miserable and still in despair.

We have more gadgets, more toys, more gizmos, more technologies than ever before. We have the choice of foods from every continent at our finger tips. We have cable television, optical broadband, wireless laptops, iPhones, bluetooth car kits, digital photoframes, plasma screens and millions of other time saving, life enhancing gadgets. All designed to improve the quality of our lives.

Please don’t get me wrong, this is not going to be a tirade against gadegts. I actually think gadgets can be very useful. I use gadgets all the time. But I’ve observed something I just had to share.

Something is horribly missing
With all our gadgets and time saving devices we are still miserable. Something lacks, something is horribly missing. With all our time saving devices we are more busy. With all our technology we are more stressed than ever before. Why is this? Why have the gadgets which were designed to make people ‘happier’ failed to do so. We are the most miserable creatures on earth.

You will never be content. You will always want more. You will always want one better and one newer. You will never be satisfied. The miserable and dry feeling that plagues your heart can not be satisfied by buying and using gadgets. They may temporarily make your life a little more convenient, but they will not satisfy your soul. Your heart will ache for more, something deeper.

This generation has made a ‘god’ out of gadgets and technologies. It worships things. The Second Commandment in the Bible says ‘You shall have no other gods before Me’ (Exodus 20:3). Have you made a god out of gadgets and technology? Have you given these things more time, love and affection than God. Then you are guilty before God and will be judged by Him on judgement day. You are sinning against God when you live for anything else but God.

The reason you feel dry and miserable even though you have all the money, gadets and technologies is because you are not living for what you were made for.

  • Why do I feel so miserable? Because life outside of Jesus is meaningless!
  • Why do I feel so miserable? Because your sin makes you miserable!
  • Why do I feel so miserable? Because you’ve put your trust in dead and false religion!
  • Why do I feel so miserable? Because ‘things’ you thought would help and save you, have actually failed you!
  • Why do I feel so miserable? Because people you thought would be there, were not there.
  • Why do I feel so miserable? Because your stone heart needs to be converted. You need a new heart with new desires. Only Jesus Christ can give you this.

Living for what you were made for
But there is hope and this hope is found in Jesus Christ alone. You were made to worship the one true living God, the creator of the heavens and the earth. You were made for God’s pleasure so that you could enjoy Him for ever. Revelation 4:11 says,

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.

You were designed, fashioned and created to have fellowship not with gadgets, but with the living God. You were made with the purpose of giving God glory and enjoying intimacy with Him. You were created by Him and for Him.

All things were created by him and for him. (Colossians 1:16)

So if you feel miserable, dry, lost and dead, it is because you need God. Don’t put your trust and affections in things which come and go. Put your trust in the living God who is a Rock. He never sleeps, nor fails, nor changes nor moves. He is constant and always remains steadfast in His promises. You were designed, fashioned and created to have fellowship not with gadgets, but with the living God. You were made with the purpose of giving God glory and enjoying intimacy with Him.

The Words of Jesus for those who are Miserable
If you are miserable whilst reading this, be assured that you don’t have to life in misery. Jesus said:

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Joy, real joy is the outcome of knowing, following and walking in Christ. The joys of repentance are worth more than all the diamonds in the earth.

Jesus said,

Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
