Would You Donate Your Eye For £1,000,000?
Would you donate your eye for £1,000,000? Just imagine for a moment ‘The Great Glass Eye Experiment’ was coming to a town near you. A team of scientists and medical surgeons were going around the UK, from town to town and city to city looking for eye donors. £1, 000, 000 cold cash was offered to anyone who was willing to donate one of eyes for scientific research. There was a great buzz around the town and everyone was talking about it. Even the newspapers, local radio and tv stations were curious and gave considerable coverage to the event.
- It would be painless surgery under general anaestethic;
- 15 minutes long;
- And you’de get a glass eye replacement which looks exactly like a normal eye, but you just can’t see through it;
- Your donated eye would be used for a good cause and to research blindness and other eye related diseases.
£1,000, 000 cash to take away. No terms and conditions and no fine print. Just £1,000,000. Would you do it?
Now, most of you wouldn’t. You’d say, “get out of here, I’m not about to donate my eye for any amount of cash”. But if the scientist upped the value to £15m, £20m or maybe even £30m then maybe one or two really desperate individuals would donate an eyeball.
But I have yet to meet one person who would sell both their eyes for even £1 billion. Why? Because your eyes are precious to you, they are valuable to you. Without them life becomes unbearable. Imagine having all the money in the world and being blind. Buying a red Ferrari would be pretty useless to you.
Yet, your eyes are significantly insignificant in comparison to the scope of our body. If your eyes, these windows to your soul, are of more worth than all the money, riches and luxuries of the world, HOW MUCH MORE VALUABLE SHOULD YOUR SOUL BE, THAT LOOKS OUT OF THESE WINDOWS, YOUR EYES. Jesus said:
If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you, for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell (Matthew 5:30)
Jesus used this illustration to explain the horror of judgement day and the intensity of hell. It is better to lose an eye and go into heaven, than face God’s judgement and go to hell. Your soul is much more important than your eye.
Any reasonable individual would take a moment to consider eternity and where your soul is going. Your body will one day perish but your soul will live for eternity. Your soul is valuable and precious to God. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die on a cross for the penalty of your sins, so that your soul could be saved from eternal hell. The value of your soul cannot be numbered and no amount of money will ever be enough.
Don’t waste your life. This body will one day perish. 10 out 0f 10 die and this is not going to change.

Good for you Alexey and I hope you are just as confident about your soul too.
The point behind this question is the use of a hyperbole. Jesus used hyperboles often to make a strong impression behind a point he was making.
Jesus said ‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:25-26)
