Part 11 | The Only True God – God is Omnipotent

The world hungers for a Savior. They are crying out for someone they can put their trust in and someone who will not disappoint them. They need someone who has everything in control, someone to understand them, someone who can give them meaning and ultimately someone who can save them. But the irony is that He who came for this purpose is being rejected and regrettably, much of Christendom is guilty today. We have forgotten the power of an Almighty and omnipotent God. A W pink said:
We cannot have a right conception of God unless we think of Him as all powerful.
The omnipotence of God means this: God is all (omni) powerful (potent). He has chosen to keep this attribute exclusively to Himself and therefore the word itself is true only of God and Him alone. His power is not like ours; it doesn’t decrease or run low, it is at its optimum at all times. We tire and require rest to recuperate, but God is never in need of respite and His power remains un-relinquished. Stephen Charnock writes:
The power of God is that ability and strength whereby He can bring to pass whatsoever He pleases, whatsoever His infinite wisdom may direct, and whatsoever the infinite purity of His will may resolve. . . . As holiness is the beauty of all God’s attributes, so power is that which gives life and action to all the perfections of the Divine nature. How vain would be the eternal counsels, if power did not step in to execute them. Without power His mercy would be but feeble pity, His promises an empty sound, His threatenings a mere scarecrow. God’s power is like Himself: infinite, eternal, incomprehensible; it can neither be checked, restrained, nor frustrated by the creature.
What God cannot and will not do
Although God has all power He cannot and will not do that which contradicts His holy character and personhood.
- God cannot destroy Himself because He is eternal, immutable, and all wise.
- God cannot lie because He is truth (Titus 1:2; Heb 6:18).
- God cannot go against His Word because He is faithful (2Ti 2:13).
- God cannot be tempted by evil (James 1:13).
God’s power in Creation
Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you. (Jeremiah 32:17)
Words such as hard and easy does not apply to God, they applies to us. Let us look at the wonder of His creation:
- The Human Eye: An adult eye is typically equipped with up to 120 million rods which detect the intensity of light and about 6 million cones which detect the frequency of light. These rods and cones send nerve impulses to the brain. The nerve impulses travel through a network of nerve cells. There are as many as one-million neural pathways from the rods and cones to the brain. This network of nerve cells is bundled together to form the optic nerve on the very back of the eyeball.
- The Platypus: God’s joke on the scientists. God expressed his sense of humor in assembling a creature that is a part mammal (produces milk and is furry), part reptile (lays eggs and has venom) part bird (lays eggs, has a bill like a duck as well as webbed feet). So it’s an egg-laying, venomous, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal: only God could do this!
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are on the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it to whom it seemed proper to Me. (Jeremiah 27:5)
God can and does everything He chooses and we are assured that He will do it properly. If it were us, there are sure to be imperfections but with Him we know that whatever He does is perfect. Not only does God perfectly make all things, He also keeps them.
Your righteousness is like the great mountains; your judgments are a great deep; O LORD, You preserve man and beast. (Psalm 36:6)
…and upholding all things by the word of His power. (Heb 1:3)
God’s power in Salvation
…for I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. (Romans 1:16)
God in His infinite wisdom and omnipotence chose the Gospel to be the means of salvation. Jesus came to die on a bloody cross, so the wrath of God would be satisfied and therefore reconcile man to God – This is the power of God.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1Corinthians 1:18)
At the Cross of Jesus Christ you see the power of forgiveness, the power of love and the power of obedience. At His resurrection you see His power over sin and death.
God’s power in Evangelism
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:6)
It comforts me knowing that we do not save men, God saves men. All we have to do is remain faithful to the gospel proclamation and trust in an all-powerful God to save men.
We do not measure the success of our evangelism based on how many people come to God, or how many people we spoke to but successful evangelism is based on a people who believe that their God is mighty to save. We must continue to evangelize, continue to pray for our unsaved friends, family, loved ones, colleagues and believe that our God is mighty to save. And when you feel discouraged, let the words of our Lord comfort you:
…and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. (Matt 28:20)
Points to ponder and practice
1) There is nothing to hard for Him:
Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)
He can answer any prayer in accordance with His personhood. No matter what situation you may be find yourself in, take heart and know that you have a friend in Jesus who can do all things. He will satisfy your every desire for Him, He alone will sustain you and whom He has chosen He will keep. Tozer writes:
God can keep the stars in there courses, keep the planets in the orbit, keep the heavens up above and preserves everything in the whole universe, If He can do that surely He can keep you.
And if God Has saved you, He will keep you. He who started a good work will be faithful to complete it.
2) It ought to instill a fear of the Almighty in us. Knowing that He is all-powerful should have us reverencing Him. It should build up a healthy fear of God that will keep us on the straight and narrow path.
3) It ought to make us worship Him. We are quick to praise men of valor, prestigious sportsmen, innovative musicians and influential presidents often referring to them as powerful. But God who is all powerful demands all our praise, which should have us on our knees worshiping Him. Then we may sing along with the great multitude and say “Alleluia, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigns”
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. (Revelation 19:6:)
